St. George’s Day Festival
City: London, Borough of Southwark, District of Bermondsey (United Kingdom) |
Territorial scope: Neighbourhood/borough |
Targets: Whole population |
Policy sector: Community building/Local development/Culture |
Implementing organizations: Big Local, local Tenants and Residents Associations Main Partners: London Borough of Southwark, Bede House, Time and Talents, Millwall FC |
Objectives:To mobilise the local population around an inclusive annual festival that celebrates St. George’s Day. The festival also forms part of efforts to ‘re-claim’ the English flag from anti-immigrant parties on the far right of the political spectrum. This is in particular relevant in Bermondsey where the British National Party staged marches in the 1980s and 1990s. |
Activities: The festival is embedded in the work of, first, South Bermondsey Partnership and, since 2012, the Big Local. Both programmes have been carried out locally in cooperation with local organisations and local residents, gradually empowering the initial beneficiaries to become partners in the staging of the festival. |
